Polymaps is for making dynamic, interactive maps in modern web browsers. It provides speedy display of multi-zoom datasets over maps, and supports a variety of visual presentations for tiled vector data, in addition to the usual cartography from image-based web maps.

A backpack makes 3D maps of buildings with lasers by scanning a building’s interior and a simultaneously taking photographs of the environment. The photographs are mapped onto the 3D model created from the scans to make it photorealistic.

Radius Music combines ideas of cartography and graphic scores as a means to produce sound. The device itself is an autonomous revolving machine that reads a distance value inreal-time between itself and another object. As the machine slowly rotates and scans theroom, it takes this radial distance and outputs it as a relative sonic frequency and acorresponding visual score.

The Hand Drawn Map Association is an ongoing archive of user submitted maps and other interesting diagrams created by hand.

A Tactile Hyperglobe [PDF] is a visualization of the digital image on a physical (touch-sensitive) globe body in real space. The interaction between user (hand movement) and globe is controlled by video cameras and image recognition. By means of a stylized globe users can zoom in on any location in the world and obtain minutely detailed pictures.

Mapping Istanbul presents an initial effort to map the city of Istanbul, a city steeped in complexity. The book’s design presents this information in an accessible, narrative sequence, creating a valuable resource for architects, planners, and policy-makers invested in the city’s future.

Putting time at the core of a map’s informational value, Time Travel Maps use colours and contour lines to show how long it takes to travel between one particular place and every other place in the area, using public transport. 

Fractional Angular Analysis visualizes the network structure of the graph that is formed from the network of streets. This work is derived from a set of network theories in architecture known as Space Syntax. It is generally found that these colors which are formed from a measurement of graph structure correlate well with observed patterns of pedestrian movement. 

The Complexcity project explores major cities around the world focussing on how their urban sprawls have evolved over time. Using the patterns formed by roads in each city, Korean born designer Lee Jang Sub creates complex graphic configurations, combining the idea of natural and man made systems.
